Join us again as we travel by Steam Train from the Ipswich Railway Workshops to the historic Grandchester Railway Station on Sunday the 5th of May.
Our motive power for the day will be the workhorse of the Queensland Rail Heritage Fleet Steam Locomotive “Bety” BB18 ¼ 1079. 1079 was one of the final twenty BB18 ¼ Class 4-6-2 passenger locomotives constructed by Walkers Ltd, Maryborough between 1955 and 1958. It entered service with Queensland Railways in November 1956 and was retired from normal revenue service in October 1969. Unlike most of its sisters, 1079 escaped the scrap heap, instead being retained by Queensland Railways for historical and tourist train duties, being based and maintained with the small fleet of heritage steam locomotives at the Ipswich Railway Workshops.
Following our departure from the Workshops we will travel through the Riverlink Shopping Centre crossing the Bremer River before joining the mainline travelling past the Thomas Street Station at Sadliers Crossing extending to a rambling journey past the historic towns of Wulkuraka, Walloon and Rosewood before travelling through open country and farming land to the Grandchester Railway Station where the first section of railway opened in Queensland in 1865.
Several food vans will be setup at the Grandchester Station for passengers to purchase food and drinks.
Our last trip back in March sold out in days so secure your tickets onboard now so you don’t miss out!
We are pleased to announce an ongoing partnership between the Australian Railway Historical Society and the Queensland Museum Rail Workshops. All tickets onboard our Steam Train trips operating out of the Ipswich “Workshops” now include access to the Museum on the day of travel. Passengers are encouraged to visit the Museum for an eye-opening journey through the state’s history as seen from the birthplace of rail in Queensland, the heritage-listed Ipswich Railway Workshops. The acclaimed, award-winning Museum should be on every Ipswich visitor’s to-do list. Steeped in history – it was once the workplace of over 3000 railway workers and as visitors enter via the historic Timekeepers’ Building – they will experience the merging of the romance of yesteryear with the exciting technological breakthroughs of the present. The old boilershop houses the museum where you’re dwarfed by beautifully restored locomotives and carriages, and where kids and kids at heart will marvel at Queensland’s largest model railway featuring detailed real-life scenes of the state.
PASSENGER COMFORT
Our special Steam Train trips utilise wooden bodied carriages from the QR Heritage Fleet many of which are more than 100 years old. Unfortunately, one of the design and construction differences between these carriages and the carriages utilised today is the narrow width of many of the seats.
For your comfort and for that of our other travelling passengers we ask that if you feel it may not be possible for two passengers to be seated comfortably “side-by-side” in these narrow seats please purchase an additional ticket (at a child’s ticket price) allowing a single person to be allocated the full use of the seat.
MOBILITY
Due to the heritage nature of our carriages, access and egress from the carriages requires the ability to climb stairs and safely negotiate the gap between the platform and the carriage. Some of the platforms are much shorter than our trains which may necessitate walking through a number of carriages when boarding or alighting. These points should be considered by passengers who may have mobility issues.
