$45.00 – $292.00
Bring the family and join us for our last Steam Train trip for this year on Sunday 1st December. In a change to previous years our “Santa Train” will this year head to the Historic Grandchester Station west of Brisbane.
Established in 1865, Grandchester Railway Station was originally known as Bigge’s Camp. The name was allegedly changed to avoid the title being slurred into ‘Big Scamp’. Grandchester Railway Station provides a glimpse into the construction and operation of Queensland’s first rail line, which ran initially from Ipswich to Grandchester, before being extended to the Darling Downs. The once-essential equipment and machinery on display will fascinate young and old alike.
In addition to being the terminus for the first section of railway line laid in Queensland, the Grandchester Railway Station building was the first in the state to be constructed using local materials. The Station complex includes the station building and a signal cabin with a 22 lever T-bar machine that was decommissioned with the introduction of centralised traffic control. At its peak, Grandchester Railway Station also featured several smaller buildings, such as a cream shed and a trolley shed, as well as a fork line and cattle yards.
Today the station is a much quieter place. The station building with its signal cabin and two water tanks remain. So too does the importance of this first terminus in the timeline of Queensland history.
Our train will depart Roma Street Station at 9.10am for an 11.00am arrival at Grandchester. We will have around 2hrs before we depart for a 2.55pm arrival back at Roma Street.
Lunch will be available at Grandchester for those booking this option with their tickets. We are offering a choice of either a Chefs prepared “12hr braised pork shoulder with roast pan and apple gravy roll” or a “Slow roasted blade of beef with herb & mustard crust and red wine Jus roll”. There will also be “mini” versions available for the kids. Included with your roll will be your choice of drink (Water, soft drink or juice).
We have been in contact with the control room at the North Pole and have organised for Santa to join us on the trip back from Grandchester to Roma Street. The Chief Elf has confirmed that Santa will have enough room in his sleigh for some special Christmas sweets for the kids onboard.
Our Locomotive for the trip is expected to be BB18 ¼ No 1079 along with a selection of carriages from the Queensland Rail Heritage Fleet. Of special interest to passengers will be the inclusion on this trip of the wooden bodied heritage Dining Car No DC/G 1255. Entering service in 1935 the Dining Car would have made the long journey from Brisbane to Cairns on the original “Sunshine Express” far more enjoyable.
Originally fitted with a wood stove and icebox it seated 29 Diners. In 1970 the “galley” was reconfigured as “side-by-side” grille kitchen and now the Dining Car can seat 22 Diners. Tea, coffee, cold drinks, chips and sweets will be available for sale in the Dining Car on this trip as well as a selection of Railway Books offered by the Australian Railway Historical Society. If you are looking for a Christmas present for a “Railway Buff’ our book range may tick this off the Christmas shopping list.
Our special Steam Train trips utilise wooden bodied carriages from the QR Heritage Fleet many of which are more than 100 years old. Unfortunately, one of the design and construction differences between these carriages and the carriages utilised today is the narrow width of many of the seats.
For your comfort and for that of our other travelling passengers we ask that if you feel it may not be possible for two passengers to be seated comfortably “side-by-side” in these narrow seats please purchase an additional ticket (at a child’s ticket price) allowing a single person to be allocated the full use of the seat.
*The schedule supplied is subject to alteration in the event of changes to Queensland Rail’s Citytrain Operational Timetable and may be reviewed in the event of alterations to planned maintenance work.
