The railway brake van in Queensland, once an essential component of every train, has long since vanished from daily operations. In an era before the widespread adoption of continuous braking and robust drawgear, these unique vehicles, colloquially known as Guard’s Vans, were vital to both the operation and character of Queensland’s railway network.

Since the release of John Armstrong’s first edition of Brake Vans of the Queensland Railways 1864–1983, interest in these iconic vehicles has continued to grow. Responding to this, we are proud to present a new Second Edition, expanded by more than 25 additional pages, bringing readers additional information and a wealth of improved and additional photographs.

This edition further explores the evolution of Queensland’s brake vans, from the light four-wheeled pioneers suited to small locomotives, to the more substantial eight-wheeled bogie vans that became the standard by the 1880s. It delves deeper into the fascinating life cycles of these vans: the frequent modifications, renumberings, conversions between passenger and goods roles, and even their transformations into wagons—and back again.
